I’ve been waiting for this moment a long time, and today, it’s finally here. Over the past couple of months (in several income reports), I’ve hinted at a new authority site that has become my primary focus.
It’s in a competitive niche and won’t be easy to break through, but I’m up to the challenge. I wasn’t originally going to share all the details of this site on this blog, however I received an e-mail a few months ago asking if I would be interested in an authority site duel.
I happily accepted, and here are all the details.
The Authority Site Duel
Before I get into all the finer details of my authority site, I want to lay out exactly what the authority site duel is. In a lot of ways, it’s very similar to what Pat Flynn did over a year ago with his niche site duel.
The authority site duel was a similar idea by Sunil, who runs the Extra Money Blog. Sunil has had a lot of success with niche and authority websites (much more than I’ve had), so when he e-mailed me to challenge me to a duel, I knew this would be a great learning experience (and probably a lot of fun).
The objective: To establish an authority site in one’s field of experience, expertise, knowledge and/or passion, with an ultimate goal of creating a product (or packaged service) – going beyond ad and affiliate revenue.
Here are the basic rules:
- Must have started in the last 6-8 months, but not complete yet (brand new sites are okay).
- Must not be earning much (if any) money yet.
- Must be written from a practical, first-hand perspective – remember, you’re the authority.
- No sites in the internet marketing/make money online niche. It’s a fine industry, but we want to stay away from it for this challenge.
- You must reveal the site’s URL in the introductory post (for full transparency).
You can find more detail about the duel on Sunil’s authority site duel rules of engagement page. Also, here is the portal where you can see everyone who is competing, and join in yourself if you’re up to the challenge.
My Authority Site Revealed
This authority site was created a few months ago as a way to mix one of my passions with my desire to lose a little bit of weight.
That passion is “cooking” and I know what you’re thinking: Cooking and dieting – aren’t these two of the most saturated niches?
While it’s true that these niches are quite saturated, they are also extremely popular. When you come across a niche that’s extremely popular, although saturated, you can still hope to carve out a small piece of the pie for yourself. And a small piece is all you need to be successful.
So, much like this blog (My 4-Hour Workweek), I created a site based on a popular diet born from Tim Ferriss’s more recent book, The 4-Hour Body. And no, the site is not called “My 4-Hour Body.”
The site is actually based on the slow carb diet, called “Slow Carb Diet Experiments” which you can find at www.slowcarbdietexperiments.com.
Current Status of the Site
Right now, as I mentioned in my recent income reports, the site hasn’t been monetized yet. I’ll go into more detail in a later post about how I plan to monetize the site.
Here’s a look at last month’s traffic numbers:
It’s currently averaging over 50 visits per day, with a pretty respectable bounce rate (54.75%) and avg. visit duration (over 3 minutes). I’m happy with the progress so far, given how new the site is.
Here are some topics I plan to write about in the near future, to go in a lot more depth about this site:
- Content strategy
- Monetization strategy
- Targeted keywords (and how I plan to compete in such a competitive space)
- How to build links naturally
- Building an e-mail list without having to write an eBook
Stay tuned, I’m pretty excited about where this is going!
