Finally Revealed: My New Site & The Authority Site Duel

I’ve been waiting for this moment a long time, and today, it’s finally here.  Over the past couple of months (in several income reports), I’ve hinted at a new authority site that has become my primary focus.

It’s in a competitive niche and won’t be easy to break through, but I’m up to the challenge.  I wasn’t originally going to share all the details of this site on this blog, however I received an e-mail a few months ago asking if I would be interested in an authority site duel.

I happily accepted, and here are all the details.

The Authority Site Duel

Before I get into all the finer details of my authority site, I want to lay out exactly what the authority site duel is.  In a lot of ways, it’s very similar to what Pat Flynn did over a year ago with his niche site duel.

The authority site duel was a similar idea by Sunil, who runs the Extra Money Blog.  Sunil has had a lot of success with niche and authority websites (much more than I’ve had), so when he e-mailed me to challenge me to a duel, I knew this would be a great learning experience (and probably a lot of fun).

The objective: To establish an authority site in one’s field of experience, expertise, knowledge and/or passion, with an ultimate goal of creating a product (or packaged service) – going beyond ad and affiliate revenue.

Here are the basic rules:

  • Must have started in the last 6-8 months, but not complete yet (brand new sites are okay).
  • Must not be earning much (if any) money yet.
  • Must be written from a practical, first-hand perspective – remember, you’re the authority.
  • No sites in the internet marketing/make money online niche.  It’s a fine industry, but we want to stay away from it for this challenge.
  • You must reveal the site’s URL in the introductory post (for full transparency).

You can find more detail about the duel on Sunil’s authority site duel rules of engagement page.  Also, here is the portal where you can see everyone who is competing, and join in yourself if you’re up to the challenge.

My Authority Site Revealed

This authority site was created a few months ago as a way to mix one of my passions with my desire to lose a little bit of weight.

That passion is “cooking” and I know what you’re thinking: Cooking and dieting – aren’t these two of the most saturated niches?

While it’s true that these niches are quite saturated, they are also extremely popular.  When you come across a niche that’s extremely popular, although saturated, you can still hope to carve out a small piece of the pie for yourself.  And a small piece is all you need to be successful.

So, much like this blog (My 4-Hour Workweek), I created a site based on a popular diet born from Tim Ferriss’s more recent book, The 4-Hour Body.  And no, the site is not called “My 4-Hour Body.”

The site is actually based on the slow carb dietcalled “Slow Carb Diet Experiments” which you can find at www.slowcarbdietexperiments.com.

Current Status of the Site

Right now, as I mentioned in my recent income reports, the site hasn’t been monetized yet.  I’ll go into more detail in a later post about how I plan to monetize the site.

Here’s a look at last month’s traffic numbers:

It’s currently averaging over 50 visits per day, with a pretty respectable bounce rate (54.75%) and avg. visit duration (over 3 minutes).  I’m happy with the progress so far, given how new the site is.

What’s Next…

Here are some topics I plan to write about in the near future, to go in a lot more depth about this site:

  • Content strategy
  • Monetization strategy
  • Targeted keywords (and how I plan to compete in such a competitive space)
  • How to build links naturally
  • Building an e-mail list without having to write an eBook

Stay tuned, I’m pretty excited about where this is going! :)

Thanks for the comment Surminga! I’m pretty happy with the stats so far…now monetizing it and actually getting the traffic to convert will be a whole new challenge.

  4. Wow Eric you are getting a ton of traffic to your new authority site. Well at least for a new one.

How are getting all that traffic? Are you building links? Is most traffic from search engines?

I am building an authority site that is 4 months old and only getting between 5 to 10 unique hits per day.

The site has over 50 pages and I’ve built out various social media profiles for the site. Wrote all the content and haven’t done any other link building.

Really need more traffic ASAP for my site!

Although I have started to pick up some long tail search engine traffic, most traffic so far is from social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest). I think the nature of my content makes it highly share-able, which helps.

I’ll write a post at some point about my social media strategies for this site – I do think social media strategy is WAY more important for an authority site compared to a smaller niche site.

  5. Also why hasn’t Sunil revealed the URL for his authority site? I thought that was one of the rules?

How are you going to decide a winner?

I’m not sure why he hasn’t revealed it yet, but I’m sure he will soon (within the next week I would guess).

I don’t know how a winner will be declared, but I assume it will be measure by traffic and/or earnings.

    Hi James,

I will reveal it shortly. I didn’t want to reveal it without having a post discussing what it is, the traffic numbers, etc. I will work on that post and publish it shortly.

I agree with Eric – the winner will be he/she who is able to build the most authority and able to monetize it.

That said, the journey is the key here (the competition itself and the chance to experiment and learn from each other) rather than the destination (who wins).

I’d be glad to come last in the competition if that means picking up valuable lessons along the way and building relationships.

    Cheers

  18. What an interesting experiment, just seen that you have over 5000 twitter followers……wow! Well done you for getting all that traffic, is it mainly from link building?

    [Reply]

    Eric G. Reply:

I actually haven’t really done any manual link building aside from commenting on other related blogs. Most of my traffic is either referral traffic from blogs I’ve commented on, or a result of Twitter/Pinterest efforts. I plan on writing a post about my strategy soon.

I haven’t gotten much SE traffic yet, but have been getting a fair amount of traffic from Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. I’m looking to leverage social media pretty heavily with this site, so any organic SE traffic will be gravy.

Glad to have you in the duel, and definitely looking forward to the sites we all create.

  23. Hey Eric, you’ve got some good reader engagement on your authority site by the looks of the comments you’re getting. I look forward to your progress on this duel.

I would love to join your challenge but I at this point, I don’t feel comfortable revealing the URL/topic of my current authority site like I did when I joined Pat’s Niche Site Duel. I’ve been working on my authority site for about a year now and I’m about 2 weeks away from launching a 16 module video training course with about 90 minutes of content.

I can see huge possibilities with the topic of your authority site. In fact, we’ve made the cauliflower rice before and I really enjoy it! One thing I might suggest if you’re going to create your own product for your site… keep in mind the idea of repurposing your content to different mediums. That’s how I’m doing it with my site. When I’m done with the content for my niche, I’ll have a video product, audio product, Kindle books, and a membership site (already in the works) all from content I’ve already created.

Back to your duel, whether or not there’s a winner, in the end, I think the most valuable thing you’ll learn is the process of creating an authority site so you can repeat your success over and over again.

    [Reply]

    Eric G. Reply:

Thanks Harlan – Your decision to not want to reveal the URL is totally understandable. If you’ve found a niche where you see lots of opportunity, it may be wise to not disclose it. After, you don’t want to invite “unnecessary” competition.

I like the idea of creating a product that can be re-purposed – that’s a smart way to work.
